Distance Technologies Raises €10M to Bring Headset-Free Mixed Reality to Cars and Cockpits
Just three months after quietly stepping out of stealth, Distance Technologies is already back with news of a much bigger vote of confidence: an oversubscribed €10 million seed round led by GV, Google's venture capital arm, with additional backing from FOV Ventures and Maki.vc. The pace is notable given that the company's pre-seed round, announced when it first emerged from stealth in June, brought in a comparatively modest $2.7 million, making this seed round a sign that early demos of its technology have already won over serious investors.
What Distance is selling is a form of mixed reality that doesn't require a headset, glasses, or anything else worn on the body at all. Instead, the company's technology turns an ordinary transparent surface, such as a windshield or window, into a full mixed reality display by generating a computer-based 3D light field that blends directly with the real world behind it. Because the content fills the entire field of view rather than sitting in a small fixed frame, and because it relies on a patented per-pixel optical depth system the company describes as offering effectively infinite depth per pixel, users can simply look through the glass to see digital content appear naturally embedded in the scene in front of them.
That approach is squarely aimed at industries where asking someone to strap on a headset simply isn't realistic, chiefly automotive, aerospace, and defense. Distance says its technology demonstrator is already being evaluated by several major automotive OEMs for potential use in both windshields and side windows, while Tier-1 defense contractors and aviation companies are separately exploring it for both commercial and military cockpits. The company has also positioned the system as a way to make sense of the growing flood of data coming out of AI systems in these industries, translating it into clear, actionable visual information for the human operators who actually have to act on it.
Roni Hiranand, a Principal at GV, said the firm sees Distance's open ecosystem approach as a way to let manufacturers and integrators combine physical and digital experiences across a range of industries, adding that GV had been impressed by how quickly the team moved to develop the technology. Distance CEO and co-founder Urho Konttori described the round as validation of a mission that predates this specific funding news: making mixed reality accessible to anyone, headset or no headset, across automotive, defense, and aeronautics alike, calling GV's decision to lead its first investment in the country a strong endorsement of both the technology and the team behind it.
